Our feet are a real marvel of nature. They carry us through life every day – but they are rarely treated well enough. Without us really noticing, we're asking you far too much.

A study by the German Shoe Institute came to the conclusion a few years ago that one in five people does not wear the right shoes. Around 82% of the study participants also wore shoes that were the wrong length or width.

But the right fit is essential for well-being and an absolute prerequisite for preventing long-term damage to the foot. In the following, we will therefore explain to you what you should definitely pay attention to when buying shoes.

The right shoe size

First class and comfortable sneakers should fit well. A shoe that fits is a thumb's breadth longer than the longest toe. If the shoe closes directly with the toes, then the foot has no room to roll and is compressed with every step. Not only is this unhealthy, it can also be painful.

Incidentally, you can quickly and easily determine the right shoe size at home: stand on a white sheet of paper and try to distribute your weight evenly. Otherwise, the more heavily loaded foot will become longer. In the best case, get help from a second person and draw the outline of your foot on the paper. It is important to hold the pen at a 90 degree angle and really measure directly along the foot.

Now measure your drawing from heel to big toe. It is advisable to add 1,5 cm to the measured length so that the foot does not hit the front during the rolling movement and has enough space to breathe. You then have to divide the result by 0,667 to get the German shoe size.

The right width

In addition to the right shoe size, the width is also essential a suitable shoe. A shoe must not be too wide, otherwise the foot has no support. But even a shoe that is too tight is anything but good, because it favors you deformity of the toes.

There are three standardized shoe sizes for children in Germany: wide, medium and narrow. Many high-quality brands offer shoes according to this system. For adults, the width of the shoe is indicated by the letters F, G, H, K & M. F stands for the narrowest and M for the widest shape.

However, the range for adult feet is often very clear: Most shoes are only available in one width that is only suitable for feet with a normal build. In the past, there were only exceptions for health shoes or high-quality men's shoes. But the philosophy of the shoe industry is gradually changing, so more and more manufacturers are also offering fashionable models in different shoe widths.

Who has a wide or narrow foot, who will now also find what they are looking for online and no longer only in the medical supply store. So it is worth looking for the individual width. When trying it on, make sure that the shoe fits directly and sits well. Shoes should never be relied on to break in, no matter how much you like the pair.

Good shoes for young and old

Children and seniors in particular often wear the wrong shoe sizes because their feet change. As a child you hardly notice that you have outgrown the shoe. Feet grow in stages, sometimes several sizes within a few months. Use every visit to the shoe store to measure your feet again. This is quick and uncomplicated, but can be done just as easily at home using the method presented above.

The foot also changes with age, becoming wider and longer. The fat pad under the heel shifts backwards over the years and the high arch sinks. Water retention can also contribute to foot swelling. All of this can lead to the shoe size increasing by around one or two sizes with age. So make sure you have your shoe size re-determined again and again.

Be sure to break in shoes

Everyone is probably familiar with this situation: the day after tomorrow there is an important business meeting or a big celebration. The only thing missing for the right outfit is the right shoes. Now you buy a suitable model for this day at the last second, but then you get blisters and uncomfortable pressure points. The thoughtless purchase is quickly regretted.

Always allow enough time for new shoes to break in. Feet need this time to get used to the footwear. So you can enjoy the appointment or the celebration carefree and are not thrown off balance by unpleasant pain. Shoes should be broken in for several days in a row, 30 minutes a day is enough for this.

About wearing high heels

High-heeled shoes, also known as high heels, are often blamed for deforming feet. They are definitely a strain on hips and knees. In addition, vein function and blood circulation are restricted, which can lead to varicose veins. When worn continuously, the calf muscles become wider and shorter. Ideally, high heels should only be worn for a few hours or on special occasions.

The permanent wearing of unsuitable shoes is really harmful. In the best case, you have at least two different pairs of shoes that are used regularly and worn alternately. Incidentally, this is not only good for your feet: leather shoes in particular need a whole day to air out and dry properly. The frequent change of schools is therefore worthwhile.

Hiking shoe tips

When hiking and when Walking you need shoes that offer good heel support. At the same time, the toes should have enough room to avoid hitting the front when going downhill. In rainy weather, shoes with breathable and functional material as intermediate lining have proven their worth. The moisture is released to the outside and no water can penetrate to the inside.

Therefore, always make sure that it is dry in the shoe and that you do not slip into the hiking boots with wet feet or wet socks, otherwise blisters will form. Should a bubble appear, it is important to protect it at all times. Cover the area with a blister plaster to protect the area from further rubbing or pressure.
