Applying essential oils - The diverse possibilities of aromatherapy

essential oils

We often associate memories with smells. The smell of mum baking cookies, the salty smell of the sea on summer vacation, the aftershave that dad used and always smelled like when he read the bedtime story. Countless connections between positive thoughts and our well-being have been made in our memory over the years.

Smells are healing, relaxing, calming, reducing inflammation, awakening positive energies. This is the basis for aromatherapy. the healthy essences from nature  can be integrated into many areas.

Natural room scenting as the most common method

A purely scented candle is not aromatherapy, even if you get the feeling of relaxation. Aromatherapy sometimes requires pure natural oils whose healing ingredients have been extracted from flowers, roots, leaves or fruits. For a healing effect you can use different variants apply essential oils, for example as a room fragrance.

  • Fragrance lamps: This is where aromatherapy unfolds its effects with the help of heat. A few drops of the oil are placed in a bowl of water, the water is heated by the heat of a candle or similar and the aroma spreads throughout the room. Important: The water must not get too warm, as this will destroy the effect of the essential oil.
  • Use room fragrances through enemy diffuser rods: The principle is simple. The manufacturers deliver the already coordinated aroma mixture with fine wooden sticks, which only have to be put into the bottle.
  • There are now also professional fragrance nebulizers. They not only distribute the healing active ingredients of the essential oil in the room, but also humidify the room air at the same time. This is a pleasant additional effect, especially in heated rooms.
  • If you only want to surround a small area with the aroma, porous scented stones are ideal. A few drops of oil are simply sprinkled on there and absorbed by the mudstone.

baths and steam baths

For many, a relaxing bath is a symbol of complete relaxation. The effect can be enhanced with the right aroma.

First fill the bathtub, making sure the water is not too hot. Then choose the healing oil, but do not put it directly into the water. Essential oils must be dissolved beforehand, for example in honey, cream, sea salt or milk. When the pan is full, add the mixture. As a guide, mix 1-3 tablespoons of milk, honey or similar with 10-15 drops of oil, that's enough for a full tub.

Baths with essential oils are very important in aromatherapy because they have a double effect: the warm water opens the pores of the skin so that the active ingredients can penetrate easily. In addition, the healing aroma evaporates in the warm water of the full bath and the aromatic substances are inhaled.

aromatherapy massages

Not only massage professionals refine their massage oils with aromatic essences. This combination can also be used in the private sector. A good body oil, such as almond oil or jojoba oil, is a good base. 100 ml of it as a base tolerates about 20 drops of essential oil.

The massage movements the healing substances can be transported through the skin directly into the bloodstream. They unfold their full effect there. In addition, the positive physical contact during the massage releases endorphins, the so-called happiness hormones.

Sauna

For most people, regular sauna sessions are not just for relaxation. They also want to boost their immune systems and detoxify their bodies. The highlight for many is the sauna infusion.

Sauna infusion

However, there are many things to consider here. If in doubt, ask the sauna master which essential oil he is using. Exotic scents usually indicate synthetic oils. These smell good, but offer no healing effect. This is reserved for the natural essential oils. The classics are mountain pine or stone pine, lavender is relaxing.

Internal use of essential oils

The internal use is not as easy as as a room fragrance or as a bath additive. Due to the high concentration of the healing essences in the essential oils, irritation or allergies can also occur when ingested.

The easiest and problem-free way is to take ready-made capsules, which can be obtained from pharmacies or drugstores. Peppermint or cumin oil for digestion, for example.

To be on the safe side, the following should be observed.

  • The essential oils must be 100% pure and natural.
  • Always take very little, maximum 1-2 drops, always diluted.
  • Always ask if you can take the oil. Not every essential oil is suitable for internal use.
  • Risk groups such as small children, babies, pregnant women and people who are seriously ill should avoid taking essential oils.

The aroma kitchen

If the effect on our sense of smell is involved, it is only a few steps before we can also talk about aroma cuisine.

Of course, fresh herbs are at the top when it comes to healthy cooking, but the use of essential oils in the kitchen can also tickle our sense of taste.

Only a few drops, always mixed with a carrier, i.e. sea salt, cream, honey, are needed to turn a sauce into a special highlight, but cream refined in this way can also emphasize the basic taste of a pastry.

There are now cookbooks that explain the use of essential oils in the kitchen.
