The healing properties of hemp plants have been known for thousands of years. In the last few years, a trend has developed that slowly puts hemp in a more positive light as an intoxicant that has fallen into disrepute. Because what many people don’t know is that not all hemp is created equal. This means that not all types of hemp have an intoxicating effect, but can be used as a medicine through a variety of modes of action.

What exactly is CBD?

CBD is an abbreviation for Cannabidiol. It is an extract obtained from the flowers and leaves of hemp plants. CBD is one of more than 100 substances that can be extracted from a hemp plant. In contrast to THC, which has an intoxicating effect with which the hemp plant is often associated, CBD does not induce intoxication.

CBD is classified as a food supplement according to the German Medicines Act. For CBD products to be sold freely and be legal, the THC content must not exceed 0.2 percent. If this value is exceeded, it is a drug and cannot be sold freely.
Depending on the type of hemp, the plant has less or more CBD or THC. Commercial or industrial hemp, which is freely available in Germany, basically has a lot of CBD, and the THC content is below the limit value.

The healing effect of CBD was first scientifically proven in 1973. In the experiment, CBD was administered to animals suffering from epilepsy. The animals were found to have symptom relief. The same positive effect was later seen in humans.

How does CBD work in the body?

The human body has numerous receptors that can be stimulated by CBD. CBD can thus control, supplement and strengthen the functions of the body.

How can you take CBD?

CBD is in the form of a crystalline powder after extraction from the leaves and flowers. This pure form is also called CBD crystals.

In order to achieve the fastest possible effect, CBD can be drizzled under the tongue undiluted in crystal form or diluted as CBD oil. This is the fastest way for the active ingredient to enter the bloodstream through the mucous membranes. You can also stir the powder into your food or drink and take it this way. Some retailers also have CBD teas on sale.

There are also CBD capsules that are swallowed and then enter the bloodstream via the gastrointestinal tract. The mode of action is delayed accordingly.

CBD can also be supplied to the body in ointments or skin oils. Depending on the intended use, an appropriate dosage form should therefore be selected.

What are the uses of CBD?

CBD can be used in a wide variety of ways. It is effective against pain and is therefore suitable for pain relief, even with chronic pain. It also strengthens the immune system and helps prevent diseases.
Due to its anti-inflammatory mode of action, CBDcan be taken as an alternative to medicines both for internal inflammations such as the gastrointestinal tract, or applied to the skin in the form of an ointment for inflammations or irritations.
Thanks to its calming effect, CBD is also suitable for relieving anxiety, stress, epilepsy or depressive disorders.
Studies have also found that CBD has a sleep-inducing effect.

Since CBD regulates blood sugar and breaks down fat, it can also be taken to help you lose weight.

In any case, however, a doctor should be consulted before treatment with CBD. Even if CBD is a purely herbal product, there may be interactions when taking other drugs at the same time.

Does CBD work for everyone?

The mode of action of CBD has not yet been fully researched. But the fact is that cannabidiol has different effects on individual people. Some notice the effects just a few minutes after ingestion, some not at all.

If you don’t notice any effect, this may be due to a too low dosage. Before increasing this, however, you should ask your doctor for advice.

Those who have a lot of body fat often hardly notice the effects of CBD. This is due to the fact that body fat attracts cannabinoids, so the active substances cannot reach the actual place of action.

Sometimes you only notice an effect after consuming CBD several times, as the cannabinoids must first accumulate in the body before they can develop their full effect.

Those who consume cannabis frequently will not notice the effect of CBD, as the body is used to the much stronger THC. Since both substances are obtained from the hemp plant, the body cannot distinguish between those two and, due to the higher tolerance, only feels THC as stimulating, but not CBD.

How should you dose CBD?

There is no general recommendation for the dosage of CBD products. Manufacturers are not even allowed to give one. Depending on the CBD concentration, a high or low dose is sufficient to achieve the desired effects.

Anyone who has never taken CBD should consult a doctor first and start with a very low dose. If you decide on an oil, you should also carefully approach higher concentrations and daily dosages.

What should you look out for when buying CBD?

As with all traders offering products that are getting more and more attention due to increasing popularity, there are also black sheep that should be avoided.

Basically, you should only purchase CBD products from trustworthy retailers and not use the lowest price as a purchase criterion, because quality also has its price with CBD. Growing and harvesting hemp is time-consuming and costly. Extracting CBD from the flowers and leaves is laborious. In addition, there are costs for quality control to ensure a medically high quality product. Good CBD oils are priced in the mid double-digit euro range.

In addition, it should be ensured that the products are made in Germany – and, even better, are grown here as well. The cultivation should be organic and free of pesticides so that the end products are not contaminated with pollutants.
Manufacturers of CBD products should be able to show how their manufacturing process works and show that quality controls are carried out regularly during production.
In addition, the THC content must not exceed 0.2 percent, otherwise you run the risk of making yourself liable to prosecution for possession of such products, unless they have been prescribed by a doctor.
